COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) -- Former Marine Sergeant Mac McQuown has set out to walk through all 50 state capitals, raising money for veterans and military families.
The 51 year old left his home in Virginia 7 months ago on the 10th anniversary of September 11.
After the attacks on September 11, 2001 he wanted to serve our country again, however couldn't because of this age.
Years later he came up with the idea to walk, and raise money for every step. Organizing it all took about a year and a half.
"This walk should take about 6 years to accomplish, we want to be at least at a minimum of a million dollars when we finish," said Mac.
Mac plans to walk 15,000 miles total and recently just reached a little more than one thousand.
He pulls a cart which holds supplies he may need on the road. Mac walks in memory of all fallen soldiers and carries a picture on his cart of one particular young man Isaac Thomas Cortes who served as a Private in the Army.
"The combat boots that I wear and dog tags that I wear everyday are his. I met his mother at ground zero and she put his dog tags around my neck," said Mac.
He's currently staying with a Lexington couple who offered him their home during his stop.
