COLUMBIA (WACH/AP) -- A Columbia city councilman is giving an update on efforts to clean up lead contamination in a downtown neighborhood.

Councilman Moe Baddourah is hosting a public meeting on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Edisto Discovery Park and Neighborhood Center.

Earlier this year, state environmental officials called the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency after identifying elevated lead and arsenic levels in the soil of several yards in a neighborhood near downtown.

Since October 2012, EPA officials have been conducting clean-up measures in the Edisto Court neighborhood related to contamination found in the area earlier this year.

Officials have said a fertilizer plant that closed in the late 1930s is likely the source of the pollution.
