COLUMBIA, SC -- Midlands businesses are joining the effort to promote sustainability.

Government and business leaders announced the new Midlands Green Business Challenge Monday. The competition is open to all workplaces in Richland and Lexington counties.

It requires participants to complete four out of six sustainability goals in the next five months. Organizers have also planned free workshops and other assistance.

Columbia Sustainability Facilitator Mary Paul Baldauf said there is more than one benefit from the program.

"It is the right thing to do to protect the environment. But also, there are a lot of different things that workplaces can do that help the environment but also save money. It is kind of a regional opportunity for us to make a big difference," said Baldauf.

The contest runs until August 15. The winner will receive a grand prize gift.
