MARION, S.C. (AP) -- Marion County Sheriff Mark Richardson has fired two of his deputies after they tested positive for drugs.

Richardson told WPDE-TV that he decided to test his 40 patrolling deputies for drugs after getting a tip that his officers were using drugs.

The sheriff says one deputy tested positive for cocaine and a second deputy tested positive for marijuana. Richardson offered further testing to confirm the results, but the officers refused and were fired.

Richardson didn't release the names of the deputies, but says he sent details on their positive drug tests to the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. He expects the deputies will have their law enforcement certifications revoked.
