COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) - A person in a motorized wheelchair was hit and killed by a vehicle while crossing a street in Five Points Monday morning.

Authorities said the man was hit by a dump truck Monday morning as he tried to ride across the street in the city's Five Points restaurant and bar district near downtown.

Officers with the Columbia Police Department responded to the incident at the intersection of Harden and Greene Streets just before 11 a.m. Monday.

A spokesperson with the department says the person in the wheelchair was transported to a local hospital where he died.

Police were interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video from the area to try and figure out why the turning dump truck did not stop.

The name of the victim has not been released.
