COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Five people want to be the next leader of South Carolina's embattled unemployment agency.

A Senate committee provided the names of those who met Friday's noon deadline for filing their intent to seek the top job at the Department of Employment and Workforce.

Applications are being sent to Kelly Cox of Leesville, Derrick McFarland of Lexington, Kerry Paul of Lexington, Col. Ronald Taylor of West Columbia, and Cheryl Stanton of New York City.

The Cabinet agency has become a target of both parties.

Former director Abraham Turner resigned last month. Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. John Finan is filling in on his second interim basis.

A legislative panel will screen candidates and submit three names to Gov. Nikki Haley. If Haley rejects the nominees, the process starts over.
