CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- State Sen. Larry Grooms has conceded in the GOP primary in South Carolina's 1st Congressional District, but a recount of the votes to officially determine the second-place finisher in the crowded field will go on.

Grooms lost by just under 500 votes on Tuesday to Curtis Bostic for second place behind the top vote-getter, former Gov. Mark Sanford.

The margin between Bostic and Grooms was less than 1 percent, so a recount is required by state law.

Grooms could write the State Election Commission asking the recount be waived. And while he says it's unlikely he will gain 500 votes, he says all the votes need to be counted in case there were any errors.

The state GOP has scheduled a debate between Bostic and Sanford next week in Charleston.
