COLUMBIA (WACH) - Law enforcement officers and civilians tried to rescue a person stuck in a burning car Tuesday morning, but were unsuccessful.

A spokesperson with the Columbia Police Department says a car heading inbound on SC-277 ran into a guard rail and caught on fire. By the time rescue crews arrived, the car was engulfed in flames.

Officers and an unknown number of civilians tried to remove the driver, who died in the crash, according to police.

Police say SC-277 outbound is open and inbound traffic is expected to open around 1 p.m.
