COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Five South Carolina schools are being honored as South Carolina's best.

The elementary schools are Fort Dorchester in Summerville and Hammond Hill in Aiken County. The other winners are Hanahan Middle and Marrington Middle School of the Arts in Berkeley County, and Ashley Ridge High in Dorchester District Two.

The 2013 Palmetto's Finest Schools award has been presented by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators for more than three decades.

The awards recognize schools with high-achieving students, innovative education programs, high-quality teachers and strong community involvement.

The recognition is the main award. All finalists received a plaque. The winners also received a banner and bumper stickers.
