SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) -- A new Air Force unit is being activated at Shaw Air Force Base.

Staff Sgt. Amanda Currier says a ceremony to establish the 495th Fighter Group is scheduled for Friday at the Carolina Skies Club and Conference Center on the base outside Sumter.

Lt. Col. Juris Jansons will assume command of the group. Maj. Gen. Lawrence Wells, the commander of the 9th Air Force, is presiding at the event.

The unit is being formed to give active-duty airmen the chance to work with experienced members of the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.

The 9th Air Force is comprised of eight active-duty wings and 13 Air Reserve component wings, including about 480 aircraft and 28,000 men and women.
