LEXINGTON, SC (WACH) -- Firehouse Subs heated up the Pelion Police Department with a much needed gift Thursday.

The franchise's Public Safety Foundation awarded the department with four brand new state of the art portable radios that totaled almost $20,000. The radios will allow officers to respond to calls faster; and better communicate with dispatchers.

Firehouse Subs raised the money by selling five gallon pickle buckets and by taking donations from customers.

Pelion Police Chief Chris Garner said the radios will go a long way toward keeping the public safe.

"These radios, when they go to the encrypted channel, they cannot be detected by scanners," Garner said. "That is for officers safety as much as the people we might be dealing with. Anytime you can get a foundation like this to make such a generous donation, it is well received."

Firehouse Subs Franchisee Charles Divita said giving back to heroes is a big priority.

"One of the most important things I would have done when I finish this is be a part of the foundation," Divita said. "That kind of life saving equipment goes on long after we go."

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation was created in 2005 and has given more than $5 million nationwide; including almost $613,000 to heroes in South Carolina.
