COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating a shooting inside Palmetto Health Richland’s Emergency Department involving a prison inmate and two corrections officers Wednesday night.

Hospital spokeswoman Tammie Epps says a S.C. Department of Corrections inmate was being treated at the hospital when he took the weapon of one of the officers escorting him.

Epps says a correctional officer fired a shot toward the inmate, which helped subdue him.

No one was hurt in the incident.

According to Epps, the inmate was taken back to Kirkland Correctional Institute.

SLED is investigating the shooting and Epps says the hospital is cooperating fully.

The hospital chaplain visited the emergency department late Wednesday night to counsel those affected.
