COLUMBIA (WACH) - It is Consumer Protection Week and identity protection has been a hot topic in Columbia.

The State Department of Consumer Affairs teamed up with the South Carolina Bar, the University of South Carolina Law School and the Federal Trade Commission to offer a free identity theft seminar Wednesday.

The presentation covered everything from prevention to disputing credit reports.

"South Carolina has moved up in the numbers and right now is number 17 in the nation in identity theft complaints, and it keeps moving up, and that's not a good thing," said Cindy Liebes with the Federal Trade Commission.

Following the seminar, attendees were offered a free consultation with an attorney to discuss identity theft issues.

After the massive hacking at the South Carolina Department of Revenue, WACH would like to remind you about the free credit monitoring being offered by the state. The deadline to apply is March 31.

To sign up, go to protectmyid.com/scdor or call 1-866-578-5422.

If you've filed a state tax return in South Carolina since 1998, your personal information may have been exposed.
