CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina Republican Party has canceled a 1st Congressional District debate that had been planned for next week.
Instead, the party has opted to hold a debate between the two candidates who are expected to make a GOP runoff.
Sixteen Republicans are running in the March 19 primary for the seat vacated by Tim Scott when he was appointed U.S. senator.
The new plan calls for a debate between the two top Republican vote-getters who make an expected runoff. That debate is set for March 28 at Porter Gaud school in Charleston -- five days before the primary runoff.
There are two Democrats also running for the vacant 1st District seat. The special general election is set for May 7.
