Columbia, S.C. (WACH) -- Diabetes is a growing epidemic across the country and here in the Midlands.

According to the American Diabetes Association 1 out of every 400 children and adolesents are diagnosed with the diesease each year.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is working to drive that number down.

The palmetto chapter of the JDRF held it's annual gala at the Columbia Metropolitan Center this evening.

This year's theme Soaring to the Cure - Let the dream take flight.

"There's is nothing that they can do, no amount of exercise or diet change is going to take away the fact that they have type one diabetes, this is with them for life, so its incredibly important to understand that type one diabetes is a disease that needs a cure," said Dana Bruce-Fulmer, JDRF.

Fomer congressman John Spratt was honored for his work in diabetes.

The gala was expected to raise close to $230,000.
