CHAPIN, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina high school teacher who talked glowingly about the U.S. and the importance of embracing freedom while stomping on an American flag in his classroom is getting threatening phone calls and hate mail.

The Greenville News reports that suspended Chapin High School English teacher Scott Compton seeks a closed hearing late this month to ask the Lexington-Richland School District 5 for his job back.

His attorney says Compton's actions have been misunderstood and the district is moving to fire him for political reasons. Attorney Darryl Smalls says Compton didn't intend to be disrespectful and wanted to promote student discussion on how the nation is much more than its symbols
