CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Former Gov. Mark Sanford is spending part of his weekend meeting with voters in South Carolina's 1st Congressional District.

The Republican is starting his day Saturday with an appearance at the Lowcountry Conservative GOP Breakfast Club Candidate Forum in Summerville. Next, he goes to Goose Creek to visit a farmers market and then is in North Charleston for the Barbecue Joint's Fifth Anniversary Block Party.

Sanford is wrapping up the day with an oyster roast in Charleston.

Sanford held the seat for three terms in the 1990s and is one of 16 Republicans and three Democrats who will be competing in March 19 primary elections. The seat became vacant when sitting congressman Tim Scott was appointed to the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the resignation of Jim DeMint.
