COLUMBIA (WACH) -- A new city-wide week of service was launched this week called One Columbia: CityServe. Organizations are planning activities for April, hoping to engage thousands in city-improvement projects.

Home Works and Keep the Midlands Beautiful are two of the organizations planning service projects.

Home Works plans to oversee repairs to about 20 houses throughout CityServe week.

Keep the Midlands Beautiful is planning a number of projects for CityServe week, including their Great American Cleanup and partnerships with neighborhoods to work on their own cleanups and beautification projects.

The week-long initiative takes place April 20-28. The week will be filled with service opportunities focusing on the five areas of health, housing, hunger, education and beautification.

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin joined University of South Carolina First Lady Patricia Moore-Pastides, Fort Jackson Commanding General Bryan Roberts and Carolina Gas Transmission Corporation President Paul V. Fant to launch the new citywide public service initiative on Tuesday.

Community members who want to give a helping hand to neighbors in Columbia can sign up at the One Columbia: CityServe website.
