MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. (WACH) -- Dozens of families said goodbye to their loved ones early Saturday morning.

The South Carolina National Guard's Detachment 1, Co B, 2-238th General Support Aviation Battalion left for Ft. Hood, Texas. But not before a final goodbye ceremony.

The unit will be mobilized at Ft. Hood for a few weeks before heading out to the Kandahar Province of Afghanistan. They will be there for about a year. The unit has more than 60 soldiers and mainly focuses on carrying equipment and supplies.

Angela Barton said she has been a military wife for much of her life. But this is her first time letting her son, Specialist Seth Barton, go.

"We are a support group to one another," Barton said. "But we are also very active in supporting the troops. Those military values are instilled in Seth from when he was a child. The U.S. Army has the best training. I think he will be o.k."
