COLUMBIA (WACH / AP) – In the wake of the troubled November election in Richland County, the county’s election commission voted Wednesday to reorganize the county's election and voter registration office.

There will now be two deputy directors helping to oversee the office’s operations. Former Director Lillian McBride will fill one of those spots overseeing voter registration and absentee services. The other deputy director, Gary Baum, will oversee elections.

The two new positions are part of the board's effort to restore trust in Richland County's voting process.

McBride, who resigned as elections director earlier this month, will have a salary of nearly $75,000 a year. That's nearly $15,000 less than she made as director of elections, the post she held in the November elections when some voters waited in lines seven hours to cast their ballots.

Board of Elections & Voter Registration chairman Allen Dowdy says there is no job description yet for McBride.

“We're trying to create credibility, we're trying to create the best services to the voters, we're also trying to minimize and reduce expense,” said Dowdy.

The board also announced the formation of a search committee to find a new elections director. There is no timeline for when the new director is expected to be hired.

Dowdy says the reorganization of the department will save taxpayers money. He did not explain how.
