COLUMBIA (WACH)/AP)—South Carolina closed out 2012 with more roadway deaths than 2011, marking it the second year in a row the state saw in increase in roadway fatalities.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, initial numbers show 833 deaths on roads in the state, compared to 827 deaths in 2011.

The SCHP said that 58 percent of the 554 people killed in vehicles were not wearing seatbelts.

The most roadway deaths were reported in Greenville County with 65.  Richland County, Lexington county and Spartanburg counties all shared 48 deaths.  Union, Bamberg, and Marlboro counties all reported only 1 roadway death.

Although 2012 marked the second consecutive rise in roadway deaths, the number is well below the peak of 1,052 people killed on the state's roads in 2007.
