LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina man has been arrested after police say four children climbed out of the trunk of his car at the Lancaster Christmas parade.

Authorities say 33-year-old William Benton was arrested Saturday after police noticed him driving a car with the wrong license plate. When officers were arresting him, the trunk of the car he was driving opened, and four children hopped out.

Police say the youngest child was 11. None of them were hurt.

Benton told WBTV-TV the incident was blown out of proportion and he just had too many people to drive home from the parade. He says the stolen license plate might have been put on his car as retaliation for a family argument.

Benton faces charges including child endangerment and possession of stolen property.
