For those hoping to brighten the spirit of an American hero this holiday season, the Red Cross says they deadline to send greetings through "Holiday Mail for Heroes" is just one week away.  / MGN

COLUMBIA (WACH) - For those hoping to brighten the spirit of an American hero this holiday season, the Red Cross says they deadline to send greetings through "Holiday Mail for Heroes" is just one week away.

Friday, December 7 is the deadline to send holiday cards to men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces through the program  that has reached more than 3.5 million members of the Armed Forces since 2006 thanks to the Red Cross and Pitney Bowes.

All holiday greetings should be addressed and sent to:

Holiday Mail for Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

Officials say once the cards are received by the Red Cross, Pitney Bowes Inc. scans them ensure safety and security. Red Cross volunteers then sort and deliver them to military installations in VA military hospitals and to veteran’s organizations in the United States and overseas.

“As individuals and families make their holiday plans this year, we hope they will remember to send words of cheer and gratitude to the men and women who serve our country,” said Scott R. Salemme, regional chief executive officer, American Red Cross, Columbia Region. “We hope people will continue this simple, yet very meaningful tradition of giving thanks to those who have sacrificed so much.”
