CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Charleston Mayor Joe Riley says the city wants to take over building the final leg of Interstate 526 in suburban Charleston.

A proposal goes before city council next week in which the city will ask Charleston County to turn over the project.

Earlier this year, the state Department of Transportation Commission rejected taking over the project, upset that the county wanted the state to fund the $560 million project.

County officials tried to pass the project back to the state because there was no local agreement on how to finish the final link of the highway between James Island and Johns Island.

Riley says traffic will be a nightmare if the project is not built. He says if it's not built now, it will never be built
