COLUMBIA (WACH / AP) - As Election Day moves along, some of the lines to vote in the Midlands are standing still.

Reports of malfunctioning machines or lack of machines for the number of people in line have come in from multiple polling locations in the Midlands including Trenholm Park, Pontiac Elementary, White Knoll Elementary and Sims Park.

One would be voter left Dutch Fork High School after witnessing what he called "chaos." He said the polling manager was no where to be found and there were only three voting booths for what he estimated to be thousands of people waiting to vote.

Mike Derrick, who waited four hours to place his vote at Pinehurst Elementary, says the Election Commission has "failed badly."

"There's going to be thousands and thousands of people in South Carolina that are going to be disenfranchised, particularly in Richland County," said Derrick.

Derrick said there were between 200 and 300 people in the gymnasium of Pinehurst Elementary. He estimated that only seven or eight people were voting at that location each hour and nine out of 10 people who arrived to vote were turning around and leaving.

Fraendy Clervaud says there was a massive line wrapping around Pontiac Elementary. The poll manager told him there was one machine there that no one was using, but nothing has crashed at the location.

Some locations that initially reported issues seem to be back on track.

Around 9 a.m. Tuesday one of four of the machines at Hand Middle was down, but Alexis King said there were around 200 people in line with all machines functioning around 11 a.m.

State Election Commission spokesman Chris Whitmire says he's gotten reports Tuesday of very busy polling stations and a heavy turnout across the state.

Whitmire says everyone in line by 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote.
