FAIRFIELD COUNTY (WACH) -- The weeklong search for the Winnsboro police officer accused of shooting his estranged wife is finally over.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry says Michael Roseboro shot himself in the chest at a church camp in Fairfield County around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Officers started zeroing in on Roseboro in the afternoon after getting a tip he was seen in the area.

Berry says Fairfield County’s chief deputy came across Roseboro during the search and started talking to him. During the conversation, Berry says Roseboro pulled out a gun and shot himself in the chest.

SLED agents and Fairfield County deputies had been looking for Roseboro since Sunday, when investigators say he shot his estranged wife.

Berry says while serious, Roseboro’s injuries aren’t believed to be life-threatening.

Officials say his wife remains in the hospital.
