BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- A new effort is getting under way to limit development near the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station.

The Beaufort Gazette reports the  program gives those who own property near the base the chance to sell the rights to develop their property. The land could not be developed but developers could buy the rights and use them in other areas of the Beaufort County.

Details of the program will be sent in the coming weeks to 500 eligible property owners.

The idea is to prevent encroachment on the runways around the base.

Officials say the program is thought to be the first in the nation that would be used to protect a military base from private encroachment.
