ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- A Holly Hill man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a man who began dating his longtime girlfriend.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg  reports that a jury found 47-year-old Carvin Holman guilty Thursday of murder.

Before Holman was sentenced, he told the judge he messed up, but was angry because the victim kept taunting him about dating his former girlfriend.

Prosecutors called it a brutal killing. Investigators say Holman came to 45-year-old Anthony James' home in June 2011 and shot him in the arm with a single-shot rifle. As James tried to get away, authorities say Holman reloaded and the next shot severed the victim's spine.

Prosecutors say Holman reloaded once more and shot James in the head.
