COLUMBIA (WACH) - A first-grade student at a Columbia elementary school has been struck and killed by a pickup truck near the school.

A spokesperson with the Columbia Police Department says a 7-year-old boy was hit and killed by a car on Barhamville Road.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the child as Joshua Brown of Columbia.

Witnesses said the boy was standing with a group of children at a street corner near Watkins-Nance Elementary School. Police do not know if the boy was trying to cross the street.

Police say the person who hit Brown was driving a blue pickup truck and going the speed limit. The driver said he looked down for a second. When he looked up, he saw the boy in the road, but it was too late. The driver stopped and got out of the truck to render aid to the child while waiting on emergency responders.

According to police, a crossing guard at another intersection came and tried to assist as well, but the guard did not see the collision take place.

Brown was taken to a local hospital where he died at 3:35 p.m. of multiple trauma.

At this time, police are referring to the incident as a horrible accident and say the driver is shocked and upset.

The driver is not facing any charges at this time.

Psychologists, social workers and guidance counselors will be at the school to provide support for students and faculty.
