COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- African American studies scholar Randal Jelks is scheduled to be on the University of South Carolina campus to speak on the influence of black churches in the civil rights movement.
The school says Thursday's lecture is slated for 7 p.m. at the Darla Moore School of Business. The talk is free and open to the public.
Jelks is discussing the role of Benjamin Elijah Mays, who influenced leaders such as Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Mays made connections between the message of Christianity and a responsibility to challenge injustice in society.
Jelks is a professor at the University of Kansas. His talk is sponsored by the Institute of African American Research in the College of Arts and Sciences.
