COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis is teaming up with a major credit card company to give tips on how to avoid identity theft.

Loftis is slated to talk about how identity theft in South Carolina increased 15 percent in from 2010 to 2011 at an event Monday afternoon at the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina.

The increase sent South Carolina from 29th to 20th in the nation in per capita complaints of identity theft.

MasterCard officials are set to join Loftis to give advice on how to avoid becoming an identity theft victim and what to do if the crime happens.
