COLUMBIA (WACH) -- A Midlands veteran is working to make sure our four-legged soldiers get the recognition they deserve.

Johnny Mayo is leading an effort to create a war dog monument at Memorial Park in Columbia.

Mayo was a dog handler in Vietnam and lost one of his dogs in combat.

He says military dogs give the ultimate sacrifice, just like any soldier would.

The first phase of the monument will feature a dog handler and a German Shepherd.

A second phase will include bronze sculptures of Dobermans, Labrador Retrievers and Belgian Malinois.

The commission that oversees the park has given preliminary approval to the project but the monument still needs funding.
