COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- State environmental officials are holding a public meeting to talk about toxic metals that have been detected in a dozen yards in a Columbia neighborhood.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control is meeting with the public on Tuesday at A.C. Moore Elementary in Columbia.
DHEC says its officials will talk about voluntary cleanup contracts proposed for two companies located in the area.
DHEC last month notified the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency after identifying elevated lead and arsenic levels in the soil of several yards in a neighborhood near downtown. Officials say a fertilizer plant that closed in the late 1930s is likely the source of the pollution.
