PETERSOn AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. (WACH) - Some South Carolina residents may see or hear fighter jets controlled by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) as pilots conduct exercise flights Thursday.
The flights will take place Thursday morning to afternoon and residents between Douglas, Ga. and Sumter may hear or see NORAD-controlled fighter jets in close proximity to military of military contracted aircraft as they practice intercept and identification procedures.
Officials say the exercises are carefully planned, closely controlled and include exercising NORAD's reponse to airspace restriction violation, hijackings and responding to unknown aircraft.
Exercise flights will also take place near Michigan and Florida Thursday.
NORAD, the bi-national Canadian and American command that provides maritime warning, aerospace warning and aerospace defense for Canada and the United States, has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout Canada and the U.S. since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command’s response to the terrorist attacks that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001.
