COLUMBIA, SC (WACH / AP) -- The University of South Carolina is bringing in its new chairman of the board at a key time, as the school's enrollment and tuition hit record highs. Yet the school is still $500 million in debt after a building boom.
The State Newspaper reports Pee Dee attorney Gene Warr was elected USC's trustees chairman on Friday.
The 52-year-old said his focus is on keeping college affordable. Warr said things were different when he started school on the way to a business degree in 1977. He said back then more than 80 percent of USC's funding came from state government. State taxpayers now provide less than 10 percent of the funding.
Barnwell attorney Miles Loadholt ended his four-year limit term as a trustee chairman, citing USC's building explosion and recent athletics success among the top accomplishments.
