YEMASSEE, S.C. (WACH, AP) -- Authorities are investigating the shooting death of a Marine stationed in South Carolina.

Hampton County Sheriff's deputies say it happened early Sunday in an apparent domestic dispute.

The victim was 34-year-old Staff Sgt. Jerome Carter. Deputies say he was shot at his estranged wife's home in Yemassee.

Authorities say Carter died at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston Sunday morning.

Witnesses told deputies the alleged shooter drove off in a car and said he planned to turn himself into authorities. The man flagged down deputies about five miles from the shooting scene. Authorities did not say if he has been charged.

Carter's commanding officer, Lt. Col. William Gray, said Carter served 16 years with distinction and will be missed. Carter was assigned to the Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 31 at the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station.

"My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Staff Sergeant Carter.  My hope is that they find comfort knowing Staff Sergeant Carter touched the lives of countless Marines and Sailors, was well respected by all who knew him, and simply put, made a difference.  He served his Nation honorably and will be missed," said Gray.

The Hampton County police department is investigating the incident.
