BLYTHEWOOD, SC (WACH) - The Sumter County Coroner confirmed Tuesday that the man killed by a trooper Saturday had a blood alcohol level that was more than three times the legal limit.
The Sumter County Coroner says 24-year-old Devin Taylor of Dalzell was driving with a blood alcohol level of .25. The legal limit is .08.
The trooper stopped Taylor for speeding at Beckwood Road and U.S. 521.
Offcials said during the stop the trooper gave the Taylor sobriety tests.The trooper tried to place Taylor under arrest, but he resisted.
The press release from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety said during the struggle the trooper tried to use his taser to subdue Taylor and could not, so he fired his firearm in fear of his life.
Taylor was shot once in the chest and once in the abdomen.
Trooper B.O. Stokes will be on administrative duties during the investigation.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating further.
