ABBEVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Abbeville County officials are asking state police to investigate Sheriff Charles Goodwin amid a sex tape scandal.

The County Council voted Monday night to ask the State Law Enforcement Division to conduct an inquiry.

Last month, Goodwin admitted he was recorded having sex more than a decade ago with a woman who was not his wife. Goodwin would not discuss specifics but said the tape was made in 2001 and that his family had forgiven him.

Goodwin was not at Monday's meeting. He was first elected sheriff in 1988. Goodwin won this year's Democratic primary with 58 percent of the vote and faces a Republican challenger.
