COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH, AP) -- A Richland County sheriff's deputy has shot and killed a suspect after fighting with the man he was trying to arrest.

Sheriff Leon Lott said the shooting happened after Deputy Reginald Grant went to a motel and thought he saw a domestic dispute around 4 a.m. Thursday.

Lott says Grant confronted Keith Durham, 30, who ran away. The officer caught Durham and they struggled. During the fight, Durham attempted to use the officers Taser against him, striking the officer with only one of the two necessary prongs to use it. 

Lott says the deputy pulled out the prong, and continued to fight as Durham attempted to get the officer’s gun from his holster.  When he was unsuccessful, Durham again got hold of the Taser and pointed it at the officer. The sheriff says the deputy shot the Durham multiple times after his Taser was taken a second time. Durham was taken to the hospital where he died.

Authorities say the deputy was treated at the scene for minor injuries to his knee and arm, including bites. 

Lott said Durham had a large bag of a substance that appeared to be cocaine, along with several smaller bags commonly used for the distribution of cocaine.
