BLYTHEWOOD, SC (WACH) - The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehciles is looking into a fake document that is being placed on vehicles parked in spaces reserved for those with disabilities.

Authorities say the document, which misrepresents the department,  was reported in Richland County and indicates the vehicle was parked illegally.

“The bottom line is that this document is not from DMV,” said Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. “We don’t have a Handicapped Inspection Division and we do not have the authority to issue citations. The person distributing this document is committing fraud—plain and simple.”

The fraudulant document specifies four parking offenses that may result in fines or penalties including observed parking in marked Handicapped parking spot without appropriate parking pass, observed parking in marked Handicapped parking spot without obvious visible handicap, observed parking in marked Handicapped parking spot with possible handicapped occupant that did not exit vehicle, and observed other miscellaneous Handicapped parking violation.

DMV officals remind the public that only law enforcement officers have the authority to write citations.

Anyone that receives one of these documents is asked to contact the DMV at (803) 896-5000.
