CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A relic hunter from Columbia has found a rare freedman's tag near Charleston that dates from the late 1700s.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Hal McGirt found the tag earlier this year at a plantation on the Cooper River.
McGirt said Wednesday he's been told the tag probably dates from about 1783 and is probably worth about $25,000. He says there are no plans to sell the tag.
The tags indicated that the person with the tag was not a slave.
McGirt did not reveal the exact location where he found the City of Charleston Free Badge No. 320.
