COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Almost 100 veterans were deployed one more time Wednesday.  Their destination? Washington D.C.

These vets making the trip from Columbia to our nation's capital on an Honor Flight. The flights give veterans a chance to visit war memorials, remember those who fought alongside them, and take in the sites of the country they fought for. Honor Flight was started in Ohio, and now takes place in states all over the nation.

"You know, I'm 89, and I'm one of the younger World War II people," says WWII veteran Abraham Thomy.  "I looked around and I saw a lot of my World War buddies and the shape they were in... God bless them... but we're still here."

Thomy, who joined the Army when he was 18, is just one of the many veterans who had never seen his war's memorial before.

"They were going to be doctors, preachers, and lawyers," explains Thomy.  "They had their dreams, and their dreams were interrupted... but they gave their life for our freedom."

After touching down back in Columbia Wednesday night, the group was welcomed by the Patriot Guard Riders and more than 200 others.

Many of those who did return from war wonder why their dreams were left intact.  That thought adds a bittersweet taste to an otherwise patriotic welcome home.
