COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) – Victims of violent crimes and families of victims gathered at the State House Wednesday for the annual Unity Ceremony.

The South Carolina Victim Assistance Network announced the 25^th Anniversary of their Victim’s Right’s Week.

The ceremony brought together those whose lives have been impacted by violent crimes.

During the ceremony lives lost were remembered and survivors were comforted.

The crowd was full of people from all over the state who each had their own story of tragedy, and one couple was there for a multiple reasons.

Tom and Lorraine Lucas drove from Spartanburg to the Unity Ceremony in Columbia for their son who was killed in the state’s first quadruple homicide 9 years ago.

At the time Brian Lucas was 29 years old working at Superbike Motorsport in Chesnee when someone shot him and 3 of his co-workers execution style.

May 1st would have been Brian's 38th birthday.

It’s hard to believe that somebody didn’t see anything, because I have been out there at all times of the day and night, just watching. Traffic goes by and somebody goes by every 30 seconds,” said Lorraine Lucas.

“Seeing that our case is unsolved and we lost our son who was 29 years old at the time, a father and family man, you never get over it, every day is a challenge you try to make it through one day at a time,” said Tom Lucas.

The case remains unsolved, leaving his family with plenty of unanswered questions.

Three years after his son’s death Tom Lucas became a volunteer for The South Carolina Victim Service Coordinating Council, to help families who are victims of violent crimes.

He’s also started the states Unsolved Homicide Playing Card program. The deck of cards each represents unsolved murders, missing people, and fugitives.
