CHESTER, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say they are awaiting the results of an autopsy before deciding if additional charges should be filed against a Chester man who police say attacked his pregnant girlfriend, who then lost the baby.

Investigators told The Herald of Rock Hill that 39-year-old Aris Nichols stabbed 21-year-old Brittney Jordan in the neck last week.

Jordan's family says she was several months pregnant and the unborn baby died after the attack. They say she was paralyzed and remains in the hospital.

Prosecutors say Nichols is charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and may face more charges once investigators get autopsy results from the fetus. South Carolina law allows a murder charge if a viable fetus is killed during a crime.
