ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WACH, AP) - The South Carolina State University board of trustees met Thursday after the resignation of two board members.

Board members interviewed by Zoheb Hassanali with WACH Fox said they were disappointed in the resignations, but they do not believe they are the subject of any investigation.

The University received 23 applications for the interim president opening. The applications will be reviewed Friday and narrowed down to six.

Columbia attorney Matthew Richardson and retired Gen. Walter Johnson sent a joint resignation letter Monday to Gov. Nikki Haley, House Speaker Bobby Harrell and Senate President Pro Tem John Courson.

Richardson and Johnson wrote that the board could not effectively govern and asked state leaders to install new members.

The school has had a number of issues in recent months including a criminal investigation, the firing of eight high-level employees and the resignation of the university president. State lawmakers have considered legislation to address the situation by either replacing the entire board or reducing its size.
