FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) -- The two-star general in charge of the Army's largest training base is departing military life after overseeing the start of a $1 billion building boom and the most intensive revamp of training in decades.

Maj. Gen. James Milano hands over command Tuesday at the installation in Columbia. During his tenure, major changes have taken place in what recruits eat, how they train for combat, and what physical tests they must undergo.

Milano says that even as soldiers have shipped out to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the training has remained tough and rigorous.

Milano says even more change is in store as the Army cuts its numbers over the next six years, but he is confident the service will adapt.
