COLUMBIA (WACH) - A family court judge ruled Wednesday that a 14-year-old boy will be tried as an adult for his alleged role in the assault of Columbia teen Carter Strange.

The solicitor's office says Family Court Judge Dorothy Mobly Jones ruled that Delarrett Canzater, 14, will be "waived" to General Sessions Court and prosecuted as an adult for his involvement in the June 20, 2011 attack on Strange.

The Solicitor's Office filed a motion requesting that Canzater be tried as an adult on June 30.

Canzater was one of eight defendants charged in the assault of Strange in the Five Points area of Columbia.  Strange was hospitalized for days and needed muliple surgerious to help him recover from severe head trauma suffered in the attack.

The Solicitor's Office filed a motion requesting one other juvenile defendant's case to be tried in General Sessions Court, but a family court judge ruled the 15-year-old would not be tried as an adult.

That teen is charged with assault and battery by a mob.

Four other suspects have already been punished by the juvenile justice system.

Family Court Judge Leslie Riddle sentenced three 17-year-olds to probation until their 18th birthday. A 13-year-old was placed on probation for two years.

They were also placed on house arrest for three months and ordered to avoid the victim and his family.

Two adult defendants are awaiting trial.

Charges are still pending against Canzater.

Family and friends of Strange have created a Facebook page and a petition to show their support for his case.
