ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WACH) - An SC State University chemistry laboratory technician and five chemistry students were released from the Orangeburg Regional Medical Center Monday night and are in good condition today after a small chemical explosion in the University’s Leroy Davis, Sr. Hall.

The laboratory technician received injuries to her forearm and the students were transported to the hospital for observation after being exposed to fumes during the evacuation process.

The explosion occurred in the chemistry laboratory preparation room at approximately 4:20 p.m. Monday afternoon.

The state-of-the-art ventilation system in the new Leroy Davis, Sr. Hall allowed for the containment of the chemical substance, preventing further exposure to additional classrooms and students.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the explosion.

Suspension of classes regularly scheduled to take place in the Leroy Davis, Sr. Hall and Old Hodge Hall remains until noon on Wednesday, Feb. 8. All faculty in the department should report to Old Hodge Hall, Room 205 on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 8:30 a.m.
