ORANGEBURG COUNTY (WACH)-- A chemical explosion in a lab at South Carolina State University injured five people Monday afternoon.
School Police Chief Michael Bartley said the explosion happened in the Leroy Davis Sr. Resesarch and Science Complex.
The four students and one instructor were treated and released from the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. Their names were not released.
Police say between 10 and 15 people were in the lab at Leroy Davis Hall when the small explosion occurred around 4 p.m.
Bartley says the room suffered minor structural damage.
Seven fire trucks and a number of ambulances responded. Those in the building at the time have been decontaminated.
The school said no activities will be conducted in the building or a nearby annex while the buildings are inspected.
The university can't confirm the exact cause of the explosion or what chemicals were involved.
