LEXINGTON (WACH) -- A Lexington teenager who would have celebrated his 18th birthday on Sunday is dead after being hit by a car Saturday evening.

South Carolina Highway Patrol officials say 17-year-old William Corley of Gilbert was trying to remove an injured deer from the road when he was hit.

The incident happened in the 1300 block of Highway 378.

Authorities say Corley parked his vehicle on the side of the highway and was helping another person who had hit the deer, when he was hit by a 2006 Toyota Camry.

Officials say Corley was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office and the S.C. Highway Patrol.
